Google is more interested in knowing how 'simple' can the prospect think. Simplicity has been at the core of the powerhouse that Google itself is. Therefore, Google wants to hire people who think simple and provide powerful answers. Unfortunately, traditional education has taught people to think in complex ways - so, complexity has become a part of life for majority of 'so-called' highly educated people (including myself - I am bringing changes though).
I agree with you j2eecop; I don't think the question proposed is a silly one, it requires a clever idea to be resolved and I think that much of google's software is based on clever ideas (anyone said mapreduce?)
Once again it seems that Google is looking for smart people; not good software developers. Sorry but being smart is not enough, other important skills are required, eg. discipline, knowledge, team work, etc. Geniuses might make your application do the right thing (maybe), but good software developers will make your application do the thing right!
its just like martial arts - some people believe that technique matters, some think that only genetics matter. I need to finally understand that being interested in java doesnt help me on job market, i will get it one day.

Yes, they appear as silly questions.
