It’s almost half way into 2008. I think it’s about time to have a reality check on what’s going on in RIA space. Specifically, what’s up with Adobe Flex, Microsoft Silverlight and Sun JavaFX, the so called RIA trio.

Two problems:
1) Poorly written. Hard to read.
2) The classic goof of making big industry conclusions and prognostications based on Google searching. There are many way Google Trends can send you the wrong way. For example, if there are escalating issues with Silverlight, or Flex, then searches will be biased not my developer interest, but rather by admin/end-users looking for solutions.

True. Those numbers can't be interpreted in an absolute way, say just positive searches. But consider this, no matter the amount of hits for negative feedback/escalating issues and the like the point is that people still write about those technologies, so what you _may_ infer from those trends is that people are more interested in praising/bashing Flex (and to some extent Silverlight) more than Java FX.

Hmm. First, the author of the blog piece is, at a minimum, implying a positive connection between search terms and search volume. In fact, the author "congratulates" Silverlight for its quick search volume growth.

Secondly, what if more people are "more interested in talking about Flex than JavaFX"? What do we make of that? What use is in that observation?

As they say "Talk is cheap." :) A real useful measure would be a Netcraft-like testing of the number of sites (past a minimum traffic threshold) that currently use any of those (or similar RIA) technologies. Don't know if anyone provides any data like that.

Does JavaFX actually exist or is it just vaporware? We've seen demo's at JavaOne the last couple of years but javafx.com is full or Ajax and Quicktime material rather than... JavaFX.
