Just a few hours ago, Eben Upton, founder of Raspberry Pi, announced the surprise release of Raspberry Pi 2.

In addition to maintaining its $35 price tag, the Raspberry Pi 2 boasts a vastly superior CPU chip and twice as much RAM. Here are the specs:

  • A 900MHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 CPU (~6x performance)
  • 1GB LPDDR2 SDRAM (2x memory)
  • Complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1

Being touted as having “6x performance”, the multi-threaded chip turns the Raspberry Pi into something Upton calls “a usable PC.”

It was always the case that you could use a Raspberry Pi 1 as a PC but you had to say 'this is a great PC in so far as it cost me 35 bucks'. We've removed the caveat that you had to be a bit forgiving with it. Now it's just good.
- Eben Upton, Founder of Raspberry Pi Foundation

In addition to updating the hardware, the new chipset will be able to run several Linux distributions, including Snappy Ubuntu Core.

And in an effort to expand their IoT developer program, Microsoft has announced they’ll be releasing a version of the recently-demoed Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi 2. The build will be free to anyone within the Windows Developer Program and should release in the next few months.

Those with older Raspberry Pi models shouldn’t fret, however. The Model B and B+ will still be manufactured and sold, still for $35.

So, what do you think? Are you excited for the Raspberry Pi 2? Does Microsoft’s build of Windows 10 for Raspberry Pi 2 make you excited for developing within their program? Share your thoughts.
