$10k for the Best Pulse Smartpen App

· Java Zone

Discover how powerful static code analysis and ergonomic design make development not only productive but also an enjoyable experience, brought to you in partnership with JetBrains

Livescribe just issued a global challenge to developers, inviting them to build apps for the Pulse smartpen with a chance to win $10,000.  Submissions will be judged by a panel of judges and a popular vote.  Livescribe has a full Java-based development environment for developers to create Pulse smartpen applications using the Livescribe APIs.  There are already some ideas for Pulse apps posted by users.

$5,000 is the prize for the app that gets the most votes from the Livescribe fan community and $5,000 will be awarded to the judges' top pick.  If the community and the judges pick the same app, that developer will get both prizes.  Winners in each category will receive $500.  There are three application categories: entertainment, education, and productivity.  Entrants are asked to make a 30-90 second video demonstrating the application and upload it to the contest site.  Developers can find submission steps and the Livescribe SDK on the contest site.

The Pulse smartpen is Livescribe's flagship product and it allows users to record audio in sync with handwritten material (converted to PDF).  Notes and audio can be loaded onto a computer and merged together in a "Pencast".  The Livescribe software can also transcribe your handwriting into editable text.  Livescribe recently announced the launch of their App Store, which currently has over 30 applications.  Some of the apps help users read and hear translated phrases in Spanish, French, Japanese, and others languages.  There are also educational apps for geometry and chemistry, and games such as Blackjack and Hangman.  The Livescibe Pulse smartpen comes in a 2GB model ($169.95) and a 4GB model ($199.95).
