8 Notable SQL-on-Hadoop Frameworks

· Java Zone

Microservices! They are everywhere, or at least, the term is. When should you use a microservice architecture? What factors should be considered when making that decision? Do the benefits outweigh the costs? Why is everyone so excited about them, anyway?  Brought to you in partnership with IBM.

Hadoop is a standard when it comes to Big Data, and SQL is a standard when it comes data storage, so it makes sense that SQL and Hadoop would sometimes overlap. In those cases, you end up with SQL-on-Hadoop solutions. To help you make sense of what's out there, Matthew Rathbonehas assembled a list of eight of these frameworks, along with thoughts on the uses and mechanics of each.

He covers the frameworks in order of what he describes as "installation friction." These are the eight:

Each description includes a "should you use it" section, as well as a look at what's in store for the framework in the future. Each also includes a video (an intro to the framework, or a talk, or something along those lines), though these vary a bit in terms of usefulness.

Check out the full list for some SQL-on-Hadoop frameworks you've heard of, and at least a few you probably haven't.
