AI is changing the future of UXBeing a niche field, user experience will always be in demand. With each and every task getting digitized, people have started taking interest in technology-related concepts such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc. I am pretty sure that day-in-day-out, you encounter a few topics related to artificial intelligence (AI). After all, it has gained so much popularity in such little time.

Not being exclusive to desktop and laptops, the technology is also available and often deployed in smartphones (e.g. Siri) and in homes (e.g. Amazon Alexa). Apart from this, it's even utilized in self-driving cars and delivery drones. The widespread use of AI and the way its applications are branching out is completely beyond imagination. But what does it have to do with user experience or UX design?

The Role of AI in UX Design

Artificial intelligence offers a variety of benefits that end up improving how people usually perform a task. And technology has already been deployed in the digital designing world that can benefit and improve the user experience. Here are some examples:

  • TheGrid.io: TheGrid’s concept was made in 2014 and it spent years in beta phase before officially launching in 2016. Molly, the AI behind the web builder, lets you build your very own website that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly optimized. For users who have no idea how to code or manage a site, the lack of coding and web direction in TheGrid is a perk. By collaborating with Molly, users of any level of knowledge and capabilities can now make a site of their own.

  • Chatbots: Another popular example is chatbots where AI is utilized on the internet. Even though chatbots have been around since 2013, utilized by WeChat, why is it that chatbots are getting more popular right now? This is because even though there were already chatbots in 2013, they were not as sophisticated as they are now. Recently, chatbots have become more intelligent, as they began to do more complicated tasks than just chatting back to users with scripted dialogues.

Will AI Replace UX Designers?

A much better question is: Will AI and robots replace humans in terms of work and labor? No one knows what the future holds, so the answer is no, at least for now. Do you know why?

AI is still learning. For instance, when tasked to draw a cat, they drew a cat based on data of what other people had drawn. This is exactly how AI learns from past human input in Google’s experiment, Quick, Draw! They simply mimic what we humans do but they do not have the ability to have an understanding of what they are doing. And maybe that’s the reason why AI is still not sentient enough to be able to handle complicated tasks. They still need human input to function properly.

That’s not all, even being incapable of replacing human UX designers, here are some of the things that AI can do for them.

  • Saves human designers time and effort: We humans are never satisfied; our work is never done. Netflix is just one of the companies that utilize the power of AI in order to make their work faster and easier. Not only that, but they also found that AI helps them save more money. More importantly, tedious tasks such as translations and banner placements for different devices are all the AI’s doing. This saves employees time and effort and helps do more complex tasks for a company.

  • Assists in managing customer service: With billions and billions of people in different time zones, the internet seems to never rest from action. Unlike the internet, people do need some time off work. They need rest, sleep, and time for their offline lives. Businesses and online marketers would benefit from AI such as chatbots and automation. Chatbots are there to solve customer queries that customer service couldn’t. Automation, on the other hand, is there to automate the posting of updates and notices for customers.

  • Helps personalize user experiences: Of course, AI is used to tailor data gathered from the users to deliver personalized content that the user will surely take an interest in. Google search is the best example to consider.
