AIOps Isn’t a Tool — It’s a Strategy for the Modern Enterprise

According to Gartner, the use of artificial intelligence for IT operations (AIOps) in large enterprises will increase from a measly 5% in 2018 to 30% in 2023 — that’s 500% growth in just five years. Why the increased need for AIOps? Another report from the AIOps Exchange found that 40% of the surveyed IT organizations saw more than one million alerts every day, with 11% seeing more than 10 million. And while the need is there, IT teams face organizational challenges that hinder their ability to fully adopt AIOps: 

  • Reactive action vs. proactive action: Teams are often in reactive mode as they respond to increasing volumes of incidents. False alarms, data, and noise are on the rise, making it difficult to be proactive and find a true focus.

  • Lack of visibility: When teams lack visibility across their systems, they often struggle to connect data throughout infrastructure operations. In turn, this limits their ability to successfully assess critical services, identify the probable causes of incidents, and be proactive in detecting abnormalities, among other issues. 

  • Siloed IT teams: There are multiple issues that arise when teams are fragmented across organizational silos. On top of the potential for tools to overlap from team to team due to lack of communication, an absence of cross-team collaboration can also lead to siloed data that tempers organizational growth. 

  • Growing complexity of data: Today’s teams face a plethora of complex data from digital transformation and big data initiatives. As this data builds, siloed IT teams cannot make sense of fragmented, complex data sets. 

Because organizations face these various challenges across their IT operations, AIOps has quickly risen to the forefront of the conversation with the promise of reducing and simplifying the overwhelming amount of data IT teams are expected to monitor on a daily basis. Unfortunately, these conversations have simplified AIOps into being a “fix-all” tool. In reality, AIOps is much more than a tool.

AIOps Is a Strategy

As teams adopt AIOps across the entire organization, they must think of it as a multi-year STRATEGY, not just a tool. The potential AIOps brings to organizations can be game-changing for those using it to improve customer loyalty, business outcomes, proactive responsiveness and unification within an IT organization. But before teams can embark on an AIOps journey and solve their various pain points, there needs to be a re-examination of organizational processes, tools and overall infrastructure of the IT ecosystem, as well as a significant investment in automation, service management, data collection, and more. 

Additionally, finding a partner who can assist in the long-term vision for AIOps can be beneficial for teams looking to jumpstart their journey. A strategic partner can help develop an outline for the vision and plan, and conduct an audit on the current operations while keeping stakeholder expectations top of mind. In doing so, teams have a better understanding of what gaps they can fill with AIOps and what steps they need to take to fill them. The final step a partner can take is to help teams implement machine learning and automation, uncovering the full potential of AIOps across the entire organization. 

Implementing an AIOps strategy doesn’t happen overnight. It must be adopted slowly and carefully in order for organizations to truly reap the benefits. When enterprise IT teams have a true understanding of how to benefit from AIOps and look at it as a strategy rather than a tool, they set themselves, their customers and stakeholders up for long-term success.
