Amazon's Single Point of Failure: EBS in US East

Ben Kepes wrote a very interesting piece this week on his Diversity Limited blog.  He investigates a blog post that looks into the claims of AWS's fragility in the US-East-1 region, and the reason, he finds, is because Amazon builds a lot of its services on top of its Elastic Block Services:

The bottom line here is that upstream services, including ones which ironically are used to direct traffic elsewhere in the event of an outage, are reliant on EBS in order to function.

Kepes says this is a major cause for concern because a lot of large outages have been caused by the Eastern Zone.  Check out the blog post for more details on the investigation.
