AMD Confirms Phenom Delay

Late last Friday AMD confirmed reports that its quad Phenom 9700 and 9900 would be no-shows until the second quarter, claiming the decision was based on “OEM input on how AMD should prioritize its next two waves of AMD Phenom processor models.”

It says higher-volume energy-efficiency and novelty have taken precedence over the “much low-volume” high-performance 2.4GHz 9700 and 2.6GHz 9900.

So now it’s hoping to get its consumer- and commercial-bound triple-core Toliman chip out this quarter along with a new microarchitecture-based energy-efficient 65W Phenom 9000e that had been scheduled to see the light of day in Q2.

The 9700 and 9900 suffer from the same erratum as the Barcelona quad and the B3 stepping that AMD expects to solve it is also supposed to address AMD’s separate high clock rate issues.
