Apache Whirr version 0.7.0 has just been released with some nice new support features for DevOps folks and Machine Learning buffs.  The release also fixed 50 issues (4 of them were blockers). Whirr was recently promoted to a Top Level Project at Apache and this is its first release in that category.

Whirr is great for quickly starting and managing multiple clusters running on a variety of cloud servers.  Whirr is:

  • A cloud-neutral way to run services. You don't have to worry about the idiosyncrasies of each provider.
  • A common service API. The details of provisioning are particular to the service.
  • Smart defaults for services. You can get a properly configured system running quickly, while still being able to override settings as needed.

Here were the new features which take advantage of the best of both worlds when it comes to Chef and Puppet:

  • WHIRR-384 – Add Mahout as a service
  • WHIRR-49 – Allow Whirr to use Chef for configuration management
  • WHIRR-258 – Add Ganglia as a service
  • WHIRR-385 – Implement support for using nodeless, masterless Puppet to provision and run scripts

Ganglia and Mahout as deployable components is not too shabby either.  Nice job Whirr team!
