This is Okta's fourth Businesses @ Work report which examines how organizations and employees get work done. The report is based on anonymized Okta customer data from a network of thousands of companies, applications, integrations, and daily authentications from companies around the world.

Here are the key findings regarding developers:

  • Developer tools are used far and wide: 47% of Okta customers use at least one developer tool.

  • Developers love JIRA: Of those using developer tools, 48% use JIRA to track issues, making it the most popular by far. GitHub, PagerDuty, New Relic, Atlassian Cloud, Invision, Pingdom, Datadog, DigiCert, Bitbucket, VMWare account login, Jenkins SAML, SumoLogic, Apple Developer, and Splunk round out the list of most popular tools used by developers.

  • Developer tools are becoming industry-agnostic: Companies in tech and media/entertainment are the most likely to use developer tools (69.4% and 68.7% respectively), but Okta’s data shows that slowly, but steadily, organizations across all industries are adopting developer tools, building their own apps, and moving to the cloud.

  • Insurance and finance saw the biggest YoY jump in developer tool adoption at 9% and 6% respectively.

  • Companies want all the apps: The increase in developer tools is reflective of organizations investing in more technology than ever before, with the median number of pre-integrated apps per Okta customer growing 24 percent from 2015 to 2017.

  • Tech companies lead the pack when it comes to the number of distinct apps they’re using — over 1,900. Business and consulting services follow closely with 1,611 distinct apps.
