The human being is a social animal, that is well known. Without the power of the group, it would be impossible to understand the overcoming of any obstacle. No work of art or engineering is sustained by individual effort, but by collective effort. From a simple menhir to Stonehenge; from a desperate race to the New York marathon.
The world can change only through group effort, however small, as the American poet and anthropologist Margaret Mead warn us. This has been well understood by the new working methods of information technology and telecommunications. Since the advent of the internet, everything has become clearer: we are interconnected. Intelligence is collective. We inhabit a huge rhizome. We are better at supporting each other. And only by supporting each other can we build effective tools for the challenges of the future.
We Shall Move the World
History has made us understand that hierarchy and selfishness have been sad ways to make great ideas and projects fall into the drawer of oblivion or into the bonfires of unreason. That is why the best way to do our bit for a better world is to listen, to communicate, to rely on collective organization, to open our eyes, to be attentive to talent in order to make it an element of the sum, not of competition. Hierarchy is nothing but an anachronism.
If hierarchy makes us rigid, horizontality allows us to be flexible and adaptable. Resilient, a keyword in these times of speed and change. Everyone is interconnected, we create social networks. We communicate with like-minded people who live thousands of kilometers away.
These ties and capacities are used to make the most of tools that can be used in a wide variety of fields and for a wide variety of purposes. Changing. We live in a complex world.
Projects like AsyncAPI become strong from the acceptance of complexity and the overcoming of problems not as a mere difficulty, but as a challenge. Collectively, of course. The adopted model of horizontal governance means that decision-making and conflict resolution are carried out jointly by all the members of a community, creating spaces of security and trust in which everyone feels listened to and involved in the decisions that are taken.
Give Me a Place to Stand
After all, the important thing is to generate a shelter from which to create. A shelter where new Altamira bison can be born. It is only through freedom that team awareness and a sense of belonging can develop.
This does not mean that there is no system of rules, there are. There is a code of conduct that must be respected by all members of the project. They are rules that concern more the values and principles of the project than the working method itself. These rules are agreed on the basis of respect for differences and listening to each other's opinions. Everything must be valued since the multiplicity of points of view enriches the vision and decision-making. It improves perspective, knowledge and multiplies the points of support on which to overcome obstacles. Places to stand.
It is a system of governance and decision-making that is based on collectivism, which gives a voice and listens to each member of the team. After all, no one knows their work better than themselves, so within this system, each person corrects themselves and adapts their work according to the needs of the common objective. Each member is his or her own boss, decentralizing power and transferring it to each member of the team.
A Final (and Common) Goal
The final goal to be achieved is always common. It overthrows individualism and opts for a system that gives autonomy and decision-making power to each of its members. It is an idea that clashes with the fierce individualism to which we have been subjected in recent decades. For this system to work, there are key values such as transparency, fairness, and efficiency.
AsyncAPI is, therefore, determined to build on collective effort and group identity. The project is committed to a system of governance and decision-making where values come first. The means are as important as the end. Responsibilities are shared and success can only be enjoyed together.
If someone says that together we go slower, it is undoubtedly because they have not yet realized that together we go further.
