I'm pleased to say that our Webinar this week on Mainframe Integration was a great success, with many interesting questions posed by the attendees. You can catch the recording of the Mainframe Integration webinar here.

As ever in Webinars, the audience polls are of particular interest. At Axway we try to include a lot of polls in webinars, rather than just "talking to the audience". So let's look at the polls for this webinar:

Firstly, we asked why people are doing mainframe integration. Is it for mobile (and if so, is it for internal or external mobile projects?). Or is it to reach out to Cloud services? Or for B2B integration. Attendees could choose more than one answer, and here is what we found:

It's interesting to see that while cloud and mobile figure strongly, B2B is out in front. This is neat validation of our strategy at Axway, where we enable B2B connections between business, using AS2/AS3/AS4, ebXML, EDI, and of course Web APIs.
So, for these mainframe integration projects, what are the concerns? This was a bit of a leading question because in the Webinar we talked about security and performance concerns! We gave the example of a mainframe system which was actually brought down by Web Services traffic. People frequently miss the traffic management aspect of security, which can result in a system being brought down by "friendly fire". Remember that availability is part of security.
So, here are the results of the question on "What are your primary concerns with mainframe integration for API Management?"
You can see that Security and Identity Management top the concerns. The good news is that, at Axway, our products apply security in front of our mainframe connectors. In the webinar, we talked about OAuth, about API Keys, and about setting quotas for API usage.
