Ballmer Predicts the Rise of Computing Super-Powers

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has been dazzling the Financial Times with the prediction of the emergence of a “new super-group of tech companies” that will dominate cloud computing, “each of them managing what amounts to a giant centralized computer made up of a number of big data centers.”

Ballmer said Amazon’s got one, Microsoft will have one, and “rumors are Google will have one,” the paper said.

Ballmer must have been referring to Amazon EC2, Amazon’s scheme to rent out capacity on its data centers, sell storage and charge by the transaction.

The paper figures it could mean that these US Goliaths could bring down “unit costs for computing to a level others cannot match.”
