Referencing Neal Ford's seminal composable vs. contextual development tools post, Jeff Sussna has some interesting ideas about how an organization should apply contextual and composable practices.

Here's a summary of his list of composable practices:

  • Version Control
  • Desktop configuration automation
  • BDD
  • Early engagement with Infosec experts
  • Ticketing system work-unit management (instead of emails and spreadsheets)
  • Cross-functional stand ups

He seems to favor simple, lightweight comosable practices over contextual practices which perhaps try to do too much.  Comosable practices can be quickly tweaked or discarded.

In my experience, the best IT tools and practices are simple and lightweight. Their value is non-binary. They don’t make a difference between right and wrong, or good and bad. Instead, the very fact of using them makes things better.
