Evolve your approach to Application Performance Monitoring by adopting five best practices that are outlined and explored in this e-book, brought to you in partnership with BMC.

Make sure you didn't miss anything with this list of the Best of the Week in the Performance Zone (April 10 - April 17). Here they are, in order of popularity:

1. The Evolution of APM

  • In my previous post, I discussed the importance of APM. The APM market has evolved substantially over the years, mostly in an attempt to adapt to changing application technologies and deployments. When we had very simple applications that directly accessed a database then APM was not much more than a performance analyzer for a database. But as applications moved to the web and we saw the first wave of application servers then APM solutions really came into their own.

2. Scaling Your Application Efficiently - Horizontal or Vertical?

  • Anyone deploying an application in production probably has some experience with scaling to meet increased demand. Now with the advent of cloud, you can scale to theoretical infinity. Now the question changes from “Can I scale my environment to meet demand?” to “How can I efficiently scale my infrastructure to accommodate my traffic, and if I’m lucky maybe even scale down when needed?”

3. A cluster management framework, Apache Helix

  • What is Helix? It is used for the automatic management of partitioned, replicated and distributed resources hosted on a cluster of nodes.

4. XAP 10: Blowing the Lid off of In Memory Computing

  • Gigaspaces XAP has long set the standard for in-memory computing and high performance, horizontally scalable data storage. The most recent major release, XAP 10, takes In Memory Computing to another level.

5. Zero Downtime of Coherence Infrastructure (24x7 Availability) as part of Planned Deployment Strategy

  • Coherence is a reliable in-memory data grid product offering OOTB failover & continuous availability with extreme scalability. But we at times, face challenges during Coherence deployment and tend to lean towards clean restart of entire Coherence Cluster.
