Last week, the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) announced a new working rout that will develop information models for Northbound Interface open APIs. With the proliferation of approaches that networking engineers are using with NBIs, a standards committee might be necessary, although the director of the ONF says that the NBI working group is an experiment right now. It looks like he understands that standards bodies can also be a major source of drag for the progress of any technology.
A little background on the NBI from the PR:
ONF began its work with the Northbound Interface in 2012 as part of the Architecture and Framework Working Group’s study of existing SDN NBI use cases and controller Northbound Interfaces. Since that time, the number of approaches to the Northbound Interface has mushroomed to more than 20.
