The non-profit organization, Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA), is the largest independent regulator for all securities firms doing business in the United States. Not surprisingly, FINRA is a big user of the latest technology, creates mountains of big data every minute, and is a big proponent of Continuous Delivery (CD).

XebiaLabs is proud to include FINRA in our diverse and growing client roster. FINRA uses XL Deploy the market-leading application release automation software solution. XL Deploy helps customers across all industries drive financial and business value by automating application deployment, improving visibility and ensuring compliance, while saving on operational costs.

Kym Weiland, FINRA’s Director of Release Implementation, recently gave a presentation that mapped out FINRA’s history of CD and its plans for the future. XL Deploy is playing a significant role in FINRA’s CD evolution.

"We want to make sure that developers working on one team can build and deploy their applications but can’t take down or deploy over somebody else’s application," Weiland said. "What we’ve found is we need to enable the tools that developers like to use in order to make this happen. So, instead of having a separate sort of build tool that they like to live in all the time and a release tool, we actually use XL Deploy and Jenkins combined."

This strategy enables developers to use two powerful tools in tandem. Making this strategy even better is FINRA’s devotion to pipelines. The pipelines are templatized and can be automatically activated, Weiland noted.

"When developers go to their pipelines, they can see what they are deploying," she said. "Their applications are time-stamped, they can click on them, they can get the status, and they can get the build logs all right from the screens that they’re already in."

CD is not just about tools, but as FINRA demonstrates: having the right tools helps build a strong foundation for CD.
