After a long wait, Mozilla is finally getting into the app game. Interested developers can access Mozilla's JavaScript API here. Several apps are ready for download and can be tested at Web Demo Apps.  Users of the new apps will have to download the Firefox 4 browser.  

New Version of IcedTea6, 1.10

IcedTea6, the open source version of JDK6, has announced a major new release.  Several new features are now supported out-of-the-box.  Building with HotSpot 20 is supported as well as JamVM support using --enable-jamvm. Shark, a platform-independent compiler developed specifically for the IcedTea project, will now be provided upstream instead of included with IcedTea6.

Apache Excalibur Java Project Put Out to Pasture

Arthur threw Excalibur back into the lake today.  The Apache Attic, actually.  The open-source Apache Excalibur project has been officially closed. Apache cites reduced user interest as the primary reason for ending the project.  Excalibur provided users with a free Java-based, lightweight, Inversion of Control container, and components for caching/XML handling.

Patch-Level Release of Glasgow Haskell Compiler 7.0.2

A new version of GHC, a state-of-the-art programming suite for Haskell, has been released.  Improvements have been made to the type checker on GHC's optimized compiler.  Builds done on OS X 10.6 now work for 10.5 as well.  Runtime system changes include the addition of DTrace support for Solaris. Developers can download a free version of the new release here.
