On Friday, Oracle announced that the new version of Java would be using OpenJDK for its reference implementation instead of Sun's JDK. Today, voting will begin to ratify the OpenJDK Community Bylaws. The electorate is made up of contributors who have "created at least five unique nontrivial changesets in the OpenJDK Mecurial repositories in the two years preceding the start of the Ratification Vote." If the amount of Oracle employees on the Ratification Electorate is a sign of how the vote will go, the decision may already be clear. The vote to ratify the OpenJDK Community Bylaws will end 2 weeks from today.

The developers also criticized Apple's "strict limitations and the App Store Approval Process", but preferred iOS for "ease of development and monetization."

We will have to wait until Lion releases in July to see if the mode is just for security, or if it really becomes Apple's answer to their competition.
