Every week, we feature a new developer/blogger from the DZone community here and in our newsletter, catching up to find out what they're working on now and what's coming next. This week we're talking to Tim Spann, Java developer of fifteen years and blogger at http://www.agilemobiledeveloper.com. His most recent DZone posts include:

Thanks for talking to us! What have you been working on lately?

SOAPUI, Web Services, a bunch of great tools from Square for Android, Raspberry PI, Codeenvy, more MongoDB, HP Anywhere, Websockets, Powerful javascript framworks.  There's so much new amazing stuff, it's hard to keep on top of it all.  DZone is a great resource for managing that.

What do you think are some of the most exciting recent developments in the Java world?

Expansion of the JVM to tons of great new languages.  Scala, JavaScript and Groovy growing.  Vert.x is potentially massive.  The upcoming Spring 4 and JEE 7 and JDK 8 are big jumps forward.

Are there any particular developer tools or resources you couldn't live without?

Eclipse and TextPad are great.  Android Studio is looking very solid.  Maven and Gradle are critical.

Do you have a favorite open source project (or projects) that you've contributed to recently?

I am working on a few things, but I am using a ton of ones from Square lately.

Do you follow any blogs or Twitter feeds that you would recommend to developers?

Did you have a coding first love -- a particular program, gadget, game, or language that set you on the path to life as a developer?

I started on a Commodore PET writing text adventure games in PetBasic.   That was it from Grade 1 on, I never went stopped programming for more than a few days.

Anything else you'd like to mention?

Everyone needs to buy a $35 raspberry pi to experiment with.

Thanks, Tim!
