Don’t think digital transformation needs to be on your agenda? Think again

Received wisdom is often a dangerous thing.

For years, it was received wisdom that new enterprise technology shifts would be first undertaken by financial institutions, telecoms companies and the technology sector itself.

When it comes to the embrace of the current wave of digital technologies, we’re seeing something completely different. Retailers, publishers, travel and transportation companies, and even utility companies are leading the charge.

Yes, even utility companies. And more than that, even water utilities.

My recent Digital Leaders interview with Myron Hrycyk, Group CIO at Severn Trent plc, one of the UK’s major water and waste water utility providers, perfectly illustrates how – even in industries which aren’t intensively competitive and where a focus on customer needs has not dominated industry agendas – the power of digital technologies and digital transformation can and should be creatively applied.

Severn Trent is not only working on using digital technologies to improve its customers’ experiences, because it realises that customers’ expectations are shaped by their interactions with the likes of Apple, Facebook and Google. It’s working on using digital technologies to extensively rework the ways that its technicians and managers get their jobs done in the field. And more than that: it’s using digital-era processes to change the ways that it builds and delivers IT platforms and applications to its employees.

You can access the interview with Myron Hrycyk for free (you need to register, but that’s no-cost).

If you want to check out the other interviews in this series, please take a look at my interviews with the CDO of The Economist Group, Jora Gill, and with the CDO of Hampshire County Council, Jos Creese.

I’m currently finalising a fourth interview… stay tuned!

If you’re a Digital Leader doing interesting things, I’d love to talk to you – as I’ve been told a few times recently, this is the ‘Wild West’, and we all need help figuring out what good and great look like.
