The first DZone app for Windows 8 is officially ready for download on PC and tablets.  Soon, the app will be available on Android, iOS and Windows Phone.

DZone MVB and app architect Shayne Boyer called me about a week before our company Christmas party and told me that the DZone app was almost finished, but what I wasn't expecting was just how much thought he put into it.  Not only was DZone getting an app for Windows 8 PC, but also for tablets (including the Surface) and all mobile platforms.

Shayne put together a smart strategy for the tools he would use to build the app so that it could be reformatted to fit across all mobile platforms in addition to the two that the app already runs on.  If you've ever written an app for multiple mobile platforms, you may know how difficult this is.

Version 1.0 of the DZone app gives you a landscape view of our zones and as you scroll left and right to find the zone you are looking for, you'll notice that the app provides the 15 most recent articles from each zone along with the most recent 15 from any of the zones, which is found in the 'Latest' section.

As pictured above, Shayne went above and beyond to keep the DZone look; you may notice the clean and crisp Metro Style UI, but you should also notice the DZone font and colors.

Above, you can see the social integration that Shayne added, and future versions will be even more social and community driven.  There is more to come in 2013, so be on the lookout for the DZone app on other operating systems. Shayne plans to improve on this version once the app is available for all operating systems.

So, without further ado, please download the DZone 1.0 app onto your Windows 8 PC or tablet!  Let the fun begin, and don't forget to let us know what you think of the app by tweeting @DZone with the hashtag #DZapp!  Lastly, if you have any suggestions for future upgrades, let us know in the comments below or send an email to community [at] dzone [dot] com.
