The 7.0.4 beta release of Apache Tomcat is available for download this week.  The new beta fixes a plethora of bugs and contains enhancements and bugfixes from an unreleased 7.0.3 beta.  One feature from 7.0.3 further reduces code duplication in the HTTP connectors.   

Akka 1.0 Approaches
The first milestone of Akka 1.0, an actor-model framework for concurrency on the JVM, is now available for download and experimentation.  This release adds four NoSQL persistence backends: HBase, Riak, CouchDB, and Voldemort.  The akka-core has been split into three parts: akka-actor, akka-remote, and akka-typed-actor.  
Gnome 3.0 - First Preview Release!
The first development version of GNOME 3.0 is out for Linux-lovers to tinker with.  The development version is named GNOME 2.91.1 but includes the first features for GNOME 3.  The release is still very raw and some modules might not run.  The next release will be much smoother, project developers say.

Microsoft's On Board With Open Stack
Together, Microsoft and Cloud.com are building an integration with OpenStack, an open source cloud computing platform, for their Windows Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V virtualization software.  Jim Curry, the general manager of OpenStack and "Chief Stacker" said, "We’re extremely pleased to welcome Microsoft to the OpenStack community. Its contributions to the open cloud platform will expand the opportunities for customers, vendors and channel partners."  

Apple Shuns Java in Mac OS X
Apple continues to drive away Java developers and the Java platform as they announced this week that they'd deprecate Java on Mac OS X.
