Just released, a free O’Reilly book on Reactive Microsystems: The Evolution of Microservices at Scale. Brought to you in partnership with Lightbend.

At Microsoft's developer-focused Silverlight Firestarter event, they laid out the roadmap for the next version of Silverlight - an RIA platform that is now taking a slightly different direction.  Silverlight 5 will include more than 40 new features such as enhanced video, desktop-like features for web-based apps, and developer productivity improvements.  Silverlight 5 will also get Visual Studio profiling support  and performance enhancements.

Xerces-J Adds Experimental Support for XML Schema 1.1
The new 2.11 version of Apache Xerces-J is the first to add partial support for the XML Schema 1.1 implementation.  This includes experimental support for XML Schema Component Designators, implementations for simplified complex type restriction rules, and enhanced support for assertions.

KDE Software Compilation Updated to 4.5.4
The popular KDE desktop has just gotten it's fourth update to the Software Compilation package.  The changes include a bunch of translation updates and bugfixes for the Plasma desktop and Netbook workspaces.  The next major release, 4.6, is expected by the end of January 2011.

OpenSUSE 11.4 M4 Arrives Late
The fourth milestone of the openSUSE 11.4 Linux distro was scheduled for release on November 25th, but it only arrived just this week.  The new milestone is based on the 2.6.37rc3 Linux kernel.  It currently uses the GNOME 2.32 desktop environment and the KDE SC 4.6 Beta 1.  The next version of openSUSE will replace OpenOffice.org with the LibreOffice fork.
