Microservices! They are everywhere, or at least, the term is. When should you use a microservice architecture? What factors should be considered when making that decision? Do the benefits outweigh the costs? Why is everyone so excited about them, anyway?  Brought to you in partnership with IBM.

Google has until the end of the week to revise its book deal with the Authors Guild and the Association of American publishers.  A judge extended the deadline after criticisms from competitors and regulators forced Google to revise the terms of the settlement.  It seems that digitizing libraries full of books is a tough bill to pass in the face of antitrust and copyright law.

Novell's new Mono Tools for Visual Studio allow developers to build applications on the Visual Studio platform and deploy them on non-Windows platforms such as Linux.  Before Novell recently announced Mono Tools, developers could build, but not debug, Mono applications in Visual Studio.  The tools serve as a plugin for Visual Studio and are available now.

The Free Software Foundation of Europe (FSFE) says the EU's new amendment to the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) is a recipe for disaster.  In an open letter to the EU, the FSFE says that the amendment would open the door for vendor lock-in by allowing proprietary software to gain a foothold in Europe's e-government services.  The Foundation for a Free Information Infrastructure (FFII) adds that amendment would significantly change the EIF's definition of open software and undermine the interoperability of IT components in the EIF.  The FFII has issued ten recommendations to the EU for maintaining open standards.

The newly released 4.0 version of the Berkeley DB Java Edition now has replication capabilities for Oracle's key-value database.  Oracle's 4.0 release also comes with plugins for monitoring replicated and non-replicated servers.  A guide to the replication capabilities is available here.
