The Cray XT5 "Jaguar" supercomputer at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory is now the world's fastest computing system according to the TOP500 rankings.  The Jaguar grabbed the number one spot from IBM after upgrading roughly 250,000 processors from quad-core Opterons to six-core Istanbul Opterons.  The system, which is used by the US Department of Energy, delivers a performance of 1.75 petaflops per second on the Linpack benchmark.  According to the TOP500, four of the top five
supercomputers now use AMD chips.  The Jaguar upgrades
were funded by federal stimulus money. 

The first maintenance release of PHP 5.3 is available nowPHP 5.3.1 includes approximately 100 bug fixes along with the addition of the "max_file_uploads" INI directive.  The directive is intended to prevent denial of service attacks.  5.3.1 also adds missing sanity checks around EXIF processing.

The Ruby virtual machine, Rubinius 0.13, is now available.  New features for the latest version include a new QueryAgent API that currently supports the BERT protocol, and an improved bytcode compiler.  In the new Rubinium, JIT compilation is on by default.  Rubinium is written in C++ and the bytecode compiler is written in pure Ruby. 

Amazon recently helped Zeus Technology transport its new web traffic management technology to the EC2.  The technology is packaged as an Amazon Machine Image template.  Zeus Traffic Manager 6.0 lets users regulate web traffic and automate maintenance.
