The EU could issue a formal objection to the Oracle-Sun deal within the next few days according to a Financial Times report.  Just a few weeks ago, the EU's Competition Commissioner reprimanded Oracle for making no effort to address concerns about owning MySQL, the worlds fastest growing open source database.  Since Oracle hasn't budged on its intentions to keep MySQL as part of the deal, the EU is close to issuing an official statement of objections, according to a Financial Times source.  That may not seem like much, but it's the first step on the path to blocking the acquisition.  

The W3C is meeting this week to discuss the development of HTML5 and dwindling IPv4 addresses.  The W3C said it has not found a video codec for HTML5 that can satisfy everyone and they have not gotten Internet Explorer to support SVG.  The HTML5 specification just reached it's last call milestone and is projected to arrive at the candidate recommendation phase by late 2010.  The W3C also says that IPv4 addresses are expected to run out between 2011 and 2013.  Although IPv6 is ready for the switch, many networks, content providers, and service providers are not.

Newly released JRuby 1.4 now supports Ruby 1.8.7 and has a new YAML parser.  JRuby, the Java implementation of Ruby, includes a new embedding feature and also comes with a Windows Installer and Windows Native Launcher.  With JRuby, you can run Ruby programs wherever a JVM is available.  JRuby also currently holds the record for the fastest Ruby 1.8 runtime.

Update 17 of Java 6 has fixed several vulnerabilities.  The fixes include buffer and integer overflows from system infecting image and audio files.  Update 17 also closes a vulnerability that was exploited in order to forge digital signatures when verifying HMAC digests.  You can download the update here.
