A poll that includes 10 concepts for a new Eclipse logo has just opened and votes will be accepted until March 3rd. The Eclipse Foundation says that it wants an "update or modernization" for their logo, which is nine years old. After March 3rd, the top three choices will have a second round of voting to decide the next generation logo for Eclipse.
Microsoft Scoffs at Oracle's Return to the "Golden Age"
Microsoft's president of Server & Tools, Bob Muglia, taunted Oracle at the Goldman Sachs Technology and Internet Conference. You might remember that during the 5-hour Oracle-Sun roadmap marathon, CEO Larry Ellison shared his vision for a return to the "golden age" of computing when IBM provided every layer of the computing stack. This vision amuses Muglia, who says that customers prefer choices at the different levels of computing and he believes that Oracle is resisting the "natural evolution of the industry." Muglia also said that he can't see how Sparc will be able to compete with Intel's technologically superior alternative.
Android Phones Lacking in Feminine Appeal
According to Admob statistics, nearly 3/4ths of Android phone owners are male. Admob polled 963 smartphone owners and found that almost every phone besides Android models, including the iPhone, had a relatively balanced split between male and female users. The reason behind the masculine appeal of the Android could be its Sci-fi associated name, the 'less-pretty' look of their best-known phones (like the Droid), or the male-centric advertising comparing the Droid to a fighter jet and not to a "beauty pageant queen."
PayPal Gets an App Store
In an attempt to copy Apple's winning formula on the iPhone, PayPal announced its plans to open an App store for the applications that developers can now build using the recently open sourced PayPal APIs. The PayPal X platform allows developers to build payments into iPhone apps or build standalone apps for jobs such as invoicing or deal finding. Voting is currently taking place for a Developer Challenge that is aimed at showcasing the creative apps that can be built with PayPal's unique APIs.
