Ubuntu LTS 10.04 (aka Lucid Lynx) has just reached beta 1.  The beta comes with a new look for the operating system and is based on the 2.6.32.9 Linux kernel.  The depreciated HAL package has been removed for faster booting and there is built-in social networking integration that now includes Twitter, Facebook, and identi.ca.  As part of a new revenue sharing deal between Canonical and Yahoo, Ubuntu's Firefox browser will feature Yahoo as the default browser.

Ridiculous Rules for Early iPad Devs
In a 10-page pact between Apple and early access iPad developers, testers must keep the devices isolated in a room with blacked-out windows.  The iPad must also be tethered to some fixed object.  Apple won't even send the testers an iPad until they show photographic evidence that they have a room like the one described. 

Google Summer of Code Mentors Announced

The list of mentoring organizations for Google's Summer of Code has been announced.  The mentors include the Debian Project, KDE, AbiWord, FFmpeg, Facebook, the GNU Compiler Collection, LXDE, Mozilla, Ubuntu, and others.  GSoC offers university students stipends to work on code for various open source projects.

Former MySQL CEO Takes Same Position at Eucalyptus
Marten Mickos was just named the new CEO of Eucalyptus Systems, an open source Cloud Computing startup.  Eucalyptus converts data center resources such as machines, networks, and storage systems into a cloud that is controlled and customized by local IT.  In addition, Eucalyptus requires no modification, special-purpose hardware, or reconfiguration in order to provision a private or hybrid cloud.  It's also agnostic regarding VM images (Xen, VMware, etc.).
