ICANN has now begun allowing non-latin characters to be used in top-level internet domains by inserting the first IDN country-code domains into the DNS root zone.  Arab countries including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE were the first countries to get country-codes written in their native language.  Forthcoming requests include Chinese, Russian, and Thai country-codes.

Spring Buys a Gem
GemStone develops a fabric-oriented, in-memory distributed caching engine.  This kind of high-performance datacenter component was one thing that SpringSource didn't have, so it just bought one.  SpringSource plans to integrate GemStone's IP into the Spring Framework and its tc Server.  This just further validates the in-memory caching approach to scaling enterprise applications.

Pay in Cash, Credit, or iPhone
A prematurely-launched story reveals a new partnership between Apple and Visa to turn the iPhone into a payWave device.  Customers simply activate an app and wave their iPhone in front of a sensor at the point-of-sale and the payment is processed.  This functionality should also be available to multiple smartphones if they have a memory card slot, says the report. 

Dragonfly Dons Apache License v2
Opera's Dragonfly (analogous to Firefox's Firebug) switched to the Apache v2 Licese and announced it at the Web 2.0 Expo this week.  The tool has been open source for some time now (under the BSD), but Opera wanted the license to include a guarantee that users were protected from Opera's patents and any other project contributor.  However, Opera said it would not consider open sourcing its browser because that would turn them into a company of managers rather than a company of engineers, they said.
