The latest developer channel version of Chrome now has support for WebM, which includes the VP8 video codec.  Believe it or not, Chrome is actually the third browser to add support for WebM even though Google was the company that started the whole initiative.  Early builds of Opera and Firefox already support WebM.  Apparently these three organizations are very confident that they are safe from patent litigation.

RiftSaw 2.1 First Release Candidate
The RiftSaw team at JBoss released its first stable version of its open source BPEL engine (2.0) a few months ago and now they are nearly finished with the next version, 2.1.  Riftsaw 2.1 CR1 adds more support for configuring Apache CXF endpoints used by a BPEL process.  Apache CXF's WS-Security features can now be configured for RiftSaw and JAX-WS handlers can be installed to intercept/observe messages by the web service representing a BPEL process.  RiftSaw is based on Apache ODE, and 2.1 now uses ODE 1.3.4.

First Release of Maverick Meerkat
The first alpha release of Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" has been released.  10.10 is based on the 2.6.34 Linux kernel and features GNOME 2.31.  It also comes with the Qt 4.7 beta package and the Evolution 2.30 client.  The final release is expected in October 2010.

Engine Yard Unleashes xCloud
The Ruby/JRuby experts over at Engine Yard have built a second PaaS cloud for easing the deployment and management of Ruby apps.  The first one was AppCloud, which runs on Amazon infrastructure.  xCloud runs on Terramark's infrastructure.  Engine Yard says their clouds are 100% open source with no vendor lock-in.
