1.5GHz Snapdragon Chips Coming to Smartphones in 2011
Qualcomm has promised handset makers that their new 1.5GHz MSM8260 Snapdragon chips will be ready for smartphones by early 2011. This should be especially beneficial for HD video. The company is also working on Augmented Reality displays and E-ink screens that don't need to turn off to save power.
Django Plugs XSS Hole
The Python-based web framework Django has released version 1.2.2 this week in response to a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability found in the code. Oddly enough, the exploit was found in the Cross Site Request Forgery protection feature that was added in version 1.2.0. Users are of course urged to upgrade immediately.
EC2 Micro Instances Introduced
This week Amazon announced a new low-cost instance type for lower throughput applications and websites running on their Elastic Compute Cloud. These "Micro Instances" provide 613MB of memory and support 32 and 64 bit Linux and Windows platforms. These instances start at 2 cents per hour on Linux and 3 cents per hour on Windows. Amazon continues to capture the less-wealthy end of the market.
Oracle "Leaning Heavily" Towards JDK 7/JDK 8 Feature Split
It looks like we may not see closures in Java until late 2012, but we could see some JDK 7 features as early as mid 2011.
