It struck me that the applications based on the Eclipse platform are covering a wider range as time goes on. No doubt the focus on Equinox will broaden the scope of Eclipse applications even further, but on the desktop as a plain RCP application, Bioclipse is quite impressive.

Although I'm not a biochemist, I'm a big fan of innovation and really like to see these type of RCP based applications to showcase Eclipse as a platform rather than a simple IDE. The application provides functionality for chemo- and bioinformatics as well as providing extension points for further plugins to give even more functionality. This is an example of RCP development done right - build on the platform, and allow developers to  continue to plugin to your own application through defined extension points. Graphics are drawn using the Jmol-plugin, an open source viewer for chemical structures in 3D.

Bioclipse is developed as a collaboration between the Proteochemometric Group , Dept. of Pharmaceutical Biosciences, Uppsala University, Sweden, and the Research Group for Molecular Informatics at Cologne University Bioinformatics Center (CUBIC).
