I’m playing with an ending for my book, what do you think?
Current ways of working are making us sick, is this the cure?
Working in a hierarchy, being told what to do, rushing with no time for reflection, no purpose is making us sick. We suffer from anxiety, depression, tension, loneliness, paranoia. We take our frustration out on our family and friends spreading these dysfunctional ways down through the generations. I reflect on my time working in these environments and the effect it had on me and I wonder about the damage it’s doing to us, and our society.
We live with the loneliness and the competitiveness, the blame and fear because everybody else does. Beginning to make a change towards a supportive, happy and effective work time starts with people. When we stop treating each other as a threat and see each other as vulnerable people just like us we can start.
If not us then who?
Do we really care about the life of your customer and our employees, or are we just after making money out of them? Do we really care about our colleagues and friends or are we just trying to get ahead of them? The change in this book, is about stopping wasting our own, colleagues and customers time and working in a way that improves and enriches our life. Perhaps in the future we’ll start valuing this over money and power. Once you’ve discovered it, what can you do to help it spread? The right path is not the easy one.
Letting go at work is liberation. It’s not always easy. The shift from being told what to do to having real responsibility for finding the solution can be a shock. When you are free to use what ever means you have to solve problems, frustration dissolves. I could never go back to following procedures that don’t really fit . Work stops being separate from life. It becomes meaningful, joyful. Can you imagine people turning on to being creative inside and outside their work life; engaging with each other more deeply, learning together, being open?
