One of the most impressive trends of 2017 was the rapid growth and uptake of machine learning within enterprise software. While many predicted machine learning to be an impactful trend for the year, the speed at which innovation occurred made it stand out. With adoption quickly accelerating from initial research to implementation, AI and machine learning were pushed to the forefront for businesses on digital transformation journeys. Rapid growth in these areas, the increase of digital assistants being used in the workplace, and bigger investments in big data analytics will be the trends to watch for as we head into 2018.

AI Will Demonstrate ROI for Businesses

IDC says that by 2019, 40% of digital transformation initiatives will use artificial intelligence (AI) services. In the coming year, AI will power new value creation, freeing up resources through the automation of monotonous, repetitive tasks that are inherent in running a business via end-to-end process automation. Adding AI into business processes gives employees more autonomy in their day to not only increase their operational efficiency but also their ability to be more creative and focus on higher-level projects and tasks that produce more value for an organization. This could mean increased ROIs and/or faster go-to-market strategies for new innovations.

Voice-Activated Assistants Will Become Normal

As Google Home and Amazon Echo became a huge part of the consumer experience in 2017, we expect we will see voice-activated assistants expand in a big way into the enterprise. With Gartner predicting that by 2020, 30% of web browsing sessions will be done without a screen, companies will need to turn more focus toward leveraging the capabilities of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning so that they can offer employees a cognitive and conversational user experience. Digital assistants will aid corporations and their employees with everything from identifying and learning situations to providing insights and suggestions for next steps to guiding complex workflows.

Big Data Analytics Investments Will Grow

The sheer volume of data that companies are now collecting from a multitude of sources is overwhelming, and 2018 will bring focus on to the data-driven organization where internal, external, structured, or unstructured data will supply critical insights for new innovations and strategies. The advantages of data-driven analytics will push companies to implement more and more of the tools needed to manage, govern, analyze, and harvest data accordingly in the upcoming year. Companies embarking on the next stage of or beginning their digital transformation journey will need to place quality data and access to real-time data from which end users can pull actionable results as a top investment priority.

Conclusion

In 2018, the industry will see AI and machine learning play an active and growing role in more than just automating tasks. These technologies will use deep learning to take on activities that free up workers' time to focus on more complex projects that require human intervention and enable them to spend time on being truly creative and innovative. Serving as powerful tools for the digital workforce, this technology will simplify access and analysis, ultimately paving the way for ideation, conceptualization, and production to be completed more efficiently and intelligently than ever before.
