Fritz, the leading edge computing platform for mobile developers, today announced the close of a $2M seed round led by Eniac Ventures, with participation from Uncork Capital and Hack VC, among others. Fritz makes it easy to move machine learning and AI algorithms onto phones, closer to the data, allowing developers to focus on creating new products and better experiences. The financing allows the company to scale operations, hire more top talent, and continue to build its community.

“We are excited to support the launch of Fritz. Edge computing is here and developers need to be paying attention,” said Vic Singh, Founding General Partner, Eniac Ventures. “A natural progression from cloud computing, machine learning is moving out to edge devices like mobile phones, and the millions of intelligent devices like cars, home systems, personal gadgets, robots, medical equipment, etc. In order to give users the best real-time experiences, processing neural networks and machine learning should be at the edge on the device rather than round trip to server and back. Fritz allows the data to be processed as close as possible to the sensor that collects it.”

Currently, models made for the cloud have to be ported for use on the edge and are often too large and too computationally expensive. Optimizing infrastructure is complex, and porting things from one platform to another involves many fragile steps and high-risk, repetitive tasks.

“Today, creating apps that run machine learning models on a phone is a huge challenge. It can take months or even years to optimize, deploy, and manage your models across millions of devices,” said Jameson Toole, Co-founder and CEO, Fritz. “We built Fritz to handle the hard parts so that mobile developers can spend less time on infrastructure and more time perfecting their core user experience.”

“Amazing new user experiences are enabled by running machine learning and artificial intelligence directly on a mobile device. While the cloud will continue to be the primary place to train models, the edge will dominate AI usage thanks to billions of smartphones and IoT devices coming online,” said Dan Abdinoor, Co-founder and CTO, Fritz. “We are excited to have the support of our investors to continue to grow the team and expand operations.”

Fritz is now available for early sign up to developers building apps with TensorFlow and Core ML. Learn more at www.fritz.ai.
