Getting Started with Apache Solr
You've probably heard of Solr, the fast, open source search server (say that ten times fast!) on the Lucene Java search library. But if you haven't had a chance to set it up and tinker with it, do yourself a favor and check out the Solr presentation from ApacheCon NA 2011. The presentation is something of a walkthrough by Chris Hostetter, a member of the ASF and the Lucene Project Management Committee.
Follow along and you'll learn how to install Solr, configure it and get started on full-text searches of structured data in no time. You'll also hear a bit about some of Solr's built-in features, such as:
- loading data from CSV files
- tolerant parsing of user input
- faceted searching
- highlighting matched text in results
- retrieving search results in a variety of formats (e.g. XML and JSON)
If you'd like something to help you follow along with the mp3, or just to look over so you don't have to take any notes, check out this pdf with slides from the presentation that Hostetter gave on the same topic at ApacheCon NA 2008.
