Yesterday the GlassFish team gave an overview of their roadmap to let the community know about the plans for GlassFish since the Oracle takeover.  Importantly, they cleared up all the FUD around the impacts of the acquisition, clearly stating that Oracle are committed to the community, and that there is no changes to how the GlassFish project operates.

While retaining the open source edition of GlassFish, there will be an Oracle GlassFish Server distribution supported by Oracle, with evaluation and production licences. Closed Source Add Ons will be bundled along with the Oracle distribution.

Perhaps the most interesting thing for developers is what is coming down the track with GlassFish:

GlassFish 2.1.2 (2010)

  • Branding, Patches
  • Added Platforms (Hardware, OS, JRockit)
  • Used by other Oracle products

GlassFish 3.0.1 (2010)

  • Branding, Patches
  • Multi-Lingual Release
  • Interoperability with Oracle Middleware Products

GlassFish 3.1 (2010)

  • Centralized Administration / Clusters
  • High Availability / State Replication
  • Value Added Features, like Coherence Support

GlassFish 3.2 (2011)

  • Improved Cluster / HA Administration
  • Better Integeration with Oracle Identity Management
  • Virtualization Support
  • JavaEE 6 Spec Updates
  • JavaEE 7 Early Access

 GlassFish 4

  • Common Server Platform - sharing with WebLogic Server
  • JavaEE 7
