There’s no shortage of good news on the way for those migrating their company data to a public cloud. Benefits can include cost savings, improved operational agility, and the ability to add valuable new functionality. But despite its potential, it is becoming increasingly critical to know how to execute a cloud migration properly, especially when it comes to maintaining data security and implementing a setup that takes optimal advantage of a public cloud’s potential. The bluer skies of cost savings and secure data can be reached, but the transition requires a careful–and knowledgeable–approach.
Here are four tips to consider for carrying out a smooth, safe, and advantageous migration of company data to a public cloud:
1) Be hands on in maintaining your data security.

We all strive to be the best and sometimes it’s hard not to splurge, but the fact is that not all of your company data needs to live on the most expensive, highest-performance block storage. And, it shouldn’t. Some data types will be appropriate candidates for the fastest-access storage products, but many others simply require a safe, quaint place to call home. Be smart about taking advantage of every storage level that your cloud service provider offers, including high and low performing block storage, object storage, and cold storage. Using those tiers and locating your data properly can lead to real big savings.
