In the world of the Internet, it's no secret that you're competing with thousands of other businesses. While competition is always a good thing, there are some things that you can do to set yourself above the rest and get more customers that will stick around for years to come.

If you're looking for ways to get more customers to your local business online, here are some strategies you may want to implement:

#1 Hold a Sale

Discounts are a great way to draw in new eyeballs. Since everyone loves a new deal, consider offering a once-in-a-lifetime deal that's hard to pass up. If your deal is good enough, you'd be amazed at how fast your coupon code and promotion spreads across the web.

#2 Competitions

Holding an online competition is a fun way to build your brand. When running a competition, make sure that it has something to do with your brand. For instance, if you owned a pet supply store, you could hold a Facebook competition that allowed pet owners to submit their cutest dog pictures. Be unique with these competitions and offer lucrative prizes to get people to participate.

#3 Free Samples

People love freebies, especially if it's something that they can use in life. If you can afford mailing away free samples from your website, you may want to consider doing so. Handing out free samples is a great way to allow new customers to experience your product.

#4 Become a Partner

Partnering up with other businesses online and in person is a great way to help both parties. Whether it's exchanging links or cross-promoting a sale, this gives your online business the opportunity to tap into a new customer base. However, if you're going to go this route, you're going to want to make sure that you're networking with a business that can benefit you. For example, if we used that pet supply example again, it would probably make sense to network with a business that relates to pets.

#5 Write Content

Organic traffic through search results is a great way to lure in targeted traffic. If your online store doesn't have a blog, you may want to consider starting one up. Even if you do have one, you're going to want to make sure that you're as active as possible. Generally, the more you write, the more traffic you can potentially get. When writing this content, though, just make sure that you're writing content for your visitors, not the search engines. As algorithms become more advanced, many online stores are finding that it's harder to rank low-quality content.

Frank Scherer, who owns Tampa Exteriors, was encouraged to start a blog when he started up his website. "Maintaining a blog has been a great way to share my experience, draw in new customers and help the Internet. It also has been an amazing way to draw in new leads that cost me next to nothing," Scherer said during a recent interview when asked about his blog.

#6 Advertise

If you have the marketing budget to do so, consider using various paid advertising methods. Try experimenting with Google Adwords, Bing, Facebook and Twitter. While it can take some time to master these advertising platforms, it can do wonders for your business if you learn how to maximize your ROI. Paid advertising is an amazing way to target the exact person you're looking for.

#7 Take Advantage of Social Media

Like a blog, you're going to want to be active on social media as well. If you don't have social media profiles set up with prominent websites like Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, then it's probably best you do it as soon as possible. With billions of potential customers at your fingertips, this is a powerful advertising option that you won't want to ignore.

#8 First Time Deals

If you take a look at most of the biggest online businesses on the web, you will notice that a lot of them have something in common -- incentives, especially for first-time customers. Like the free samples and discounts mentioned above, consider offering a sweet deal for those who are making purchases for the first time.

When it comes to online marketing, the opportunities are truly endless. By implementing the eight strategies mentioned above, there's no reason your business shouldn't see growth that you're happy with.
