I enjoyed the opportunity to speak with Rajiv Mirani, CTO, Nutanix at the .NEXT conference following the introduction of three new products — Flow, Era, and Beam

There were a lot of announcements today. What the biggest for developers, engineers, and architects and why?

Beam is a new SaaS offering that delivers multi-cloud governance so organizations can manage their spending, security, and regulatory compliance across multiple cloud platforms. Beam provides visualization, predicts, manages costs to help organizations optimize their infrastructure investment. The offering is particularly useful for DevOps with regards to compliance and security.

Flow provides application-centric security to protect against internal and external threats not detected by traditional perimeter-oriented security products while also providing visibility into the performance of those applications across multiple clouds enabling the team to improve user and customer experience.

Era is a new set of enterprise cloud platform-as-a-service (PaaS) offerings to streamline and automate database operations so database administrators (DBAs) can focus on business-driving initiatives while allowing enterprises to reduce storage costs, simplify the management, control, and security of data while easing the complexity of database lifecycle operations.

How do developers, engineers, and architects need to retool their careers to excel in a hybrid multi-cloud environment?

Avoid vendor lock-in. It's easy for developers to spin up something on AWS, but it can be difficult to move your application once it's there.

Think about how to write your applications so they can move and run anywhere. Applications are written differently for the cloud. We recommend starting on-premise with the core Amazon services so you can move your code and applications back and forth. Avoid the rush to get the application out and develop the app so it will be able to run in a multi-cloud environment. Maintain your flexibility. At some point, the costs get out of control either because of scale or you've provisioned more services that you will need. Over time, it will be more cost effective to move your applications based on different factors. Different technologies are best for different applications. AI is probably best on Google (GCE).

What are the greatest challenges for legacy enterprises today moving to the cloud?

Applications and data have gravity. Apps built for the web do not translate to cloud. Block storage on Amazon is not resilient or cheap, so developers and organizations need an alternative. Developers to know the new source code. Using AWS Snowball can be a cumbersome process. We've built our platform to provide a more seamless experience between on-prem and the cloud since we see hybrid multi-cloud environments as the future for most businesses.

Another challenge is knowing which apps are right to move and are they compliant with security and governance for a particular industry. Lastly, you need to choose the right cloud for the right app. Beam provides the data and analytics that will help optimize an organization's hybrid cloud environment.

What’s the future of the cloud from your and Nutanix’s perspective?

Everyone will be in a multi-hybrid cloud environment and will have a seamless experience moving data and applications between clouds like we currently have with iPhone and iCloud. This will be a seamless extension of your infrastructure and ideal for developers, engineers, architects, and DevOps.

What have I failed to ask you that our readers need to know about the cloud and how Nutanix is making it easier for them?

What’s the right level of services you need to provide on-prem to have a comparable platform to the public cloud? We are looking at the 20 AWS services that are used by 90% of the market and providing DBaaS and an Object Store to make it easier for everyone to run their enterprise in a hybrid-multi-cloud environment.
