IT Press Tour #33 recently had the opportunity to meet with executives at VMware, where we learned a lot about the current state of the infrastructure marketplace.

Every business is a software business and application velocity and customization drive competitive advantage. Traditional software development is limiting due to a lack of choice, agility, speed, and scalability.

The solution is to run your software in the cloud. The cloud is self-service, services rich, scalable, self-optimized, resilient, and secure.

Modern, cloud-native software development can be limitless with more choice, greater velocity, better resilience, and improved scalability.

According to 451 Research, hybrid IT environments are the most popular IT approach and strategy being pursued by 57% of companies while only 19% are pursuing a public cloud-only strategy.

Purpose-built cloud management solutions make cloud complexity more manageable:

  • They provide a self-service consumption surface across all software-defined data centers
  • Expose API surfaces for IaaS, operations, auditing, cost, and logs
  • Monitor, scale, help secure, optimize virtual infrastructure consistently

Hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) is a popular solution for economic, as well as performance reasons. The total cost of ownership is being reduced by 61% while return-on-investment is +259%. Value for money (71.6%) is the driving factor in deciding on an HCI provider.

According to IDC, HCI is projected to grow at 20% per year while mid-range systems are projected to grow at 3%. HCI is needed to handle the influx of data that companies are seeing from IoT and unstructured data sources.

Use Cases

Angel MedFlight is a worldwide air ambulance is using VMware to provide uptime and reliability at 40,000 feet around the world to access data quickly and efficiently. Their legacy infrastructure was slow and difficult to update. VMware enabled programs and data to show up fast, easy, and simply. Since every moment counts for Angel MedFlight patients, it also counts for their technology.

Harro Höfliger is a Germain-based manufacturer of production and packaging systems. Harro Höfliger wanted to improve the performance, scalability, and security of investment, and high-availability of their server infrastructure and storage. They migrated to an HCI to address the need to scale computing and storage capacities quickly, on short notice.

To guarantee the high availability of applications, Harro Höfliger established two identical data centers as a cluster to ensure a transparent failover. They perform the management and administration of computing and storage in their familiar vCenter. They’re able to see the number of resources available or allocated with the press of a button. They’re also achieving a 2X to 3X compression ratio and are only using 67% of their original storage.

Cubic Mission Solutions provides networked Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR) capabilities for defense, intelligence, security, and commercial missions. Their end-user clients are military warfighters on the ground. The biggest challenge is that end-users may not have the skillsets required to build out virtual infrastructures. According to Tom Lynott, Director of Software Infrastructure, Cubic designs software that enables end-users to easily deploy systems. Cubic uses VMware for rapid deployment and automation for everything a warfighter needs in a virtual infrastructure.

They've been able to reduce the size, weight, and power requirements by not using appliances. It used to take seven hours and 750 pounds of equipment to deploy a storage appliance. Today, a hosted deployment can be done in less than 30 seconds on a 3.5-pound server.
