Here are some notes regarding how to install Ubuntu 12.10 in a VirtualBox VM. It contains a set of slides since the process is well represented visually.

Notes for Ubuntu 12.10 Installation in VirtualBox

You have some downloading to do first. You need:

  • a copy of Ubuntu
  • a copy of VirtualBox

Place your Ubuntu 12.10 ISO file somewhere you’ll remember (I create a folder called ISOs). Then you can install VirtualBox just like any other software.

RAM

You need to assign as much RAM as you can spare for the VM. At least 2Gb if you can. The VM will run on the default 512Mb, but it will be slow.

Hard drive

You’ll be creating a virtual hard drive. It’s probably best to let it expand dynamically. VirtualBox will manage how much physical space it takes up.

Settings

I suggest you increase the amount of video memory is allocated too. 12Mb probably won’t be enough. If your hardware can take it, you want at least 64Mb.

Startup disk

By default, VirtualBox thinks you’ll be running the installation from a CD. But you can click the little folder icon, and then select the ISO file you downloaded from your physical drive (the ISO folder mentioned earlier).

Finally…

Now you have Ubuntu up and running in a VM, you can go ahead and install a LAMP stack.
