Last Friday, during the Open Day in our new Munich Office, JetBrains unveiled the next release of IntelliJ IDEA, version 10.5. IntelliJ IDEA 10.5 is slated to be released in the Spring of 2011, and will be a free upgrade for existing users of IntelliJ IDEA 10.

The major focus of the new release is going to be Java 7 support. All of the new language features will be fully supported across the product, with code completion, code inspections, quickfixes and so on.

Besides that, there will be a number of new features and incremental improvements in all areas of the product, including:

  • Spring Roo console;
  • Bundled Jetty integration;
  • XSLT 2 support;
  • New refactorings for Groovy, such as Introduce Field;
  • Google Chrome support in the JavaScript debugger.

Bugfixes, usability and performance improvements will naturally take place. In particular, 10.5 will focus on improving startup performance, so you can expect the new version of IntelliJ IDEA to open and load your projects faster.

The Early Access Preview program for IntelliJ IDEA 10.5 will start in a few weeks. And if you can’t wait to try IntelliJ IDEA on your Java 7 code today, you’re welcome to check out the source code of IntelliJ IDEA Community Edition and build the new version yourself.

Best regards,
