The latest Magic Quadrant on iPaaS is out, and this market is booming. So, what can we learn about iPaaS from Gartner's latest report?

The latest Magic Quadrant on iPaaS is out, and each release is a great moment in the life of the organizations highlighted by Gartner. So what can we make of this new Magic Quadrant? And why is this Magic Quadrant important? 

Reminder: What Is iPaaS?

It is often said that it is an ESB in the cloud. This is a simplified view, but it sums it up well. To this, we can add elasticity and ease of integration between cloud and cloud to on-premise.

But Why Does iPaaS Deserve a Magic Quadrant?

Well, when an editor is bought for $6.5 billion, in this case, MuleSoft by SalesForce, the subject is all the more worth studying. And, if Gartner thinks that iPaaS will devour the world of integration and cause a review of code delivery methods, this topic is worth contemplating. And as some publishers are experiencing a 70% growth in their number of customers, we can clearly say that we are seeing a positive momentum swing for iPaaS solutions.

What is also interesting to note is that this is a market with a lot of relatively recent publishers or organizations who pivoted no more than 6 years ago to iPaaS technology.

In short, the subject is exploding, and nobody knows when the dust will settle. I would wager 2019/2020, but, in any case, when it comes to choosing an ESB or an iPaaS, choose the iPaaS now. It's better to be right too soon than to be wrong.

What Did We Learn From Gartner? 

Several remarkable facts:

  • Workato directly entered the leader box, differentiating itself via its use of AI.

  • Microsoft is progressing, even if its offer seems sparse to me.

  • Mulesoft retreats. If you have $6.5 billion to spend, call me!

  • Moskitos is progressing slowly but surely.

What Critiques Can We Bring to This Magic Quadrant? 

Like with every Gartner release, the weight of each score is not detailed, unlike in Forrester studies. And the suspicion that some people benefit a lot in their rating generated turnover comes up again and again. Especially when some big publishers, at least in regard to some other types of solutions outside of the iPaaS field, resell their product in bundles with other solutions. In short, do not take these rankings as scripture. 

The other criticism is that I find Gartner quite light on hybrid and multi-cloud capabilities. Let me explain myself. I differentiate three great iPaaS families.

  • iPaaS in a SaaS mode only.

  • iPaaS that has a cloud counterpart and an on-premise counterpart. It's good but an API manager is necessary to exchange information between the two iPaaS types.

  • The agnostic iPaaS. Only a few solutions are able to say that they use "the same flow that runs on both on-premise and cloud." I only know of Moskitos and Boomi to do this so far.

It is clear that what I call the agnostic iPaaS solutions are the most attractive because whether or not we watch, many ISs will require cloud or hybrid integration. And, clearly, you don't become an agnostic overnight...

On the multi-cloud subject, which is a bit of a buzzword right now, I believe it is highly likely that in 2019, some editors will allow deployment on Azure, Amazon, Google, etc.

Next Steps?

Clearly, if choosing an iPaaS makes sense for you, choose iPaaS over ESB. Are you sure that in ten years there will be a lot of on-premise software? I really don't think so.

If you have to decide, take the time to analyze and look at everything. Some editors offer free trials, others are quite willing to present their solutions. In short, take your time to think carefully, as next year's Magic Quadrant is sure to be full of surprises and novelties.

As far as the market is concerned, it is booming, and I would bet on the fact that we will know the big winners in 2020, and that a consolidation phase will occur sooner or later. Google bought APIGEE, Salesforce bought Mulesoft. Who's next?
