As the AI continuum keeps ascending, certain elements of the realm keep getting reproached with justifiable vindications. Artificial Intelligence (AI), initially aimed at helping humans make fairer and more transparent calls has been progressively showing signs of bias and flawed decision making. But then, it isn’t the technology that should be blamed as what drives clarity asunder is the inadequate extraction and contextual techniques— something I shall be covering at length, later in this discussion.
How Is AI Bias Even a Thing?
Long story short; AI bias, in its simplest form, concerns an anomalous output of relevant algorithms. Plus, anything that affects decision-making pertaining to AI setups can lead to bias. Unlike human decision-making, where biases are synonymous with predefined notions and perspectives, AI bias is often more targeted but with similar points of inception!

Regardless of the reasons, it is the way a model has been trained, ensures that extent or rather nature of bias. Plus, certain data scientists might even end up excluding specific entries, under-sampling, or even oversampling, thereby leading to bias via disproportion.

This form of bias creeps in when the training data gets underrepresented or isn’t selected with adequate levels of randomization. A good example would be a research report where three image recognizing AI-powered products were used to classify over 1200 parliament members from African and European countries. The study revealed better and accurate responses for males and then for fairer females. For darker skin tones, only 66 percent accuracy was achieved, thereby revealing the significance of the bias.
Reporting bias is often the result of untrained and inaccurate or loosely accurate models where the data sets hardly reflect reality. Also, most models that show reporting bias are ideated erratically by the data scientists who want to bring a bad name to a specific region by belittling the same historical presumptions and smaller sample space.
