New at the Java Store
A major step for the Java Store is the new Account Creation feature on the client side. The client side also received bug fixes, performance enhancements, and many improvements for small features. The Java Store back-end, called the Java Warehouse, is extending its reach to six more countries. They are:
- South Korea
The Java Warehouse is now available in 14 countries including the U.S. However, only U.S. developers can submit non-free applications right now. Currently, the Java Store front is only downloadable in the U.S. A blog post from Sun's James Gostling says that clearing legal hurtles in the area of global finance are the most time-consuming obstacles on the Java Store's roadmap.
John Muhlner told DZone about another feature that enabled developers outside the U.S. to preview their apps in the store view. "Outside the US developers can't download the Java Store yet, so in order to enable developers to see their application as they would appear in the Java Store, we have created a new Java Warehouse feature that launches a component of the Java Store to show the developer how consumers would see their application." There is also a preview function for each app where you can test-drive it without actually downloading it. If you don't like it, then you don't have to do a complete download.
The Java Store Beta currently supports only desktop applications, but Sun intends to move into the mobile space as soon as possible. "There are a few features that we are adding before we will consider the Java Store to be a full (GA) 1.0 release," said Muhlner. "These features include a home screen, ratings, and some of the more administrative features that provide the control of content and how it is presented."
The Java Store Beta currently has apps for social networking, business, productivity, and gaming. To learn more about developing for the Java Store, you can watch Sun Director of Engineering Bernard Traversat's "Deep Dive" video on the Java Store and Java Warehouse.
