Robert Stroud, principal analyst at Forrester Research, outlined the current state of DevOps at the Jenkins World conference in San Francisco.

He's seen a massive transition to the cloud, with mobile apps leading the charge in driving DevOps adoption. There has been velocity across internal apps, IoT-enabled smart products, and ecommerce websites as well.

When it comes to industries adopting DevOps, financial services, insurance, and banking have taken the lead over the last year. Industry regulations and restrictions have held back these groups in the past, but they are beginning to figure out ways to navigate the transition. Telecommunications and manufacturing are also increasing their adoption rates. Government, however, hasn't made a major push for DevOps yet.

Across all industries, what's holding up DevOps adoption? Silos of automation, according to Stroud. Forrester Research released a report today finding that 64 percent of businesses are dissatisfied with release velocity. Speed and quality should go hand in hand.

This year, we're seeing the pipeline start to become automated. Organizations are starting to release changes every day. That's where continuous delivery comes in. The need to transition to continuous delivery is becoming more apparent to more businesses.

Key 2017 Trends:

  • More focus on the end to end lifecycle.

  • Containers are becoming mainstream. They are being adopted and moving to production.

  • Organizations are moving from curiosity and prototyping to complete solutions and scale.

  • Everything as code.

Change is hard, but a pivotal part of DevOps is making change simple, Stroud says, as we transition from DevOps today to "BizDevOps" tomorrow.
