According to Forbes, 1.2 billion iPhones have been sold in a decade. Various incarnations of the devices have generated revenue of more than $700 billion and over $100 billion in net profit.

The WWDC keynote held on June 5th of 2017 focused on announcements for Apple TV, Apple Watch, Mac, iPad, HomePod, and the most significant of all, iOS 11. Updating an application to the latest SDK, adding features that run on the newest version of the OS, or revamping it, gives the app higher chances of being featured in the App Store. All in all, with the iOS update there have been updates or additions to various areas:

Machine Learning With Core ML

During the launch of iOS10, machine learning was introduced, whose functionalities have been extended in Core ML iOS11. Core ML lets you integrate a broad variety of computer vision machine learning model types and helps you build more intelligent applications. Features like face tracking and detection, text detection, barcode detection, image registration, landmarks, and object tracking can be delivered. The natural language processing APIs use machine learning to understand text using identification, tokenization, lemmatization, speed, and name entity recognition.

Native Augmented Reality With ARKit

ARKit uses Visual Inertial Odometry (VIO) that fuses camera sensor data with CoreMotion data to accurately sense the environment around the user without any additional calibration. ARKit provides an unparalleled augmented reality experience for iPhone and iPad users. By unifying digital objects and information with the environment around you, ARKit takes applications beyond the screen making objects to interact with the real world in entirely new ways.

Business Chat for User Engagement

It is rightly said that “Satisfaction is a Rating; Loyalty is a Brand.” Considering this, Apple is addressing user engagement with its “Business Chat” tool that brings customer service and shopping to iMessage. It allows the users to open the iMessage window from Safari, Siri, Maps, and Spotlight and start a conversation that supports basic text chats extended to more complex interactions, like scheduling an appointment. Apple now allows developers and businesses to test and make integrations with Business Chat.

Browse, Drag and Drop, and App Password Autofill

Storyboards in Interface Builder, by default, use Size Classes that are traits assigned to user interface elements like scenes and views. We are aware of the importance of Size Classes, but iOS 11 it furthers the importance with support for Drag and Drop within UIKit that moves text, images, and files between apps on an iPad. Multi-Touch can be used to move multiple items at the same time, and spring-loading to move content between the apps became possible with iOS11. The all-new Files app provides the functionality to browse, search, and organize files locally and remotely. Here, more emphasis is laid on iCloud Drive, but the functionalities have been extended to third-party cloud file providers like Google Drive and Dropbox. An additional functionality that is worth highlighting will automatically set up sign-ins into iCloud, Keychain, iTunes, App Store, iMessage, and FaceTime with Apple ID, where third-party applications will not be supported.

Exquisite Experience With Camera and Photos

Photos and videos will take up almost half of the space due to the new HEIF and HEVC formats, which are redesigned with a set of nine filters for natural skin tones. With iOS 11, portrait mode supports optimal image stabilization, HDR, and True Tone flash. Loop, bounce, long exposure, mute, trim, or choose a new key are the effects and new editing options for live photos. Memory movies automatically adapt content for portrait and landscape orientation to make the movies more accurate. It also supports animated GIFs that recognize 50 different muscle movements and then mirror the expressions in any of the twelve different Animojis.

Other Considerations With Improvements

  • Control Center redesign brings all controls onto one page.
  • Apple Music helps you discover music with friends. You can create a profile so that your friends can listen to your shared playlist.
  • FaceTime lets you capture Live Photos from the other person’s iPhone or Mac camera.
  • Free up space in Setting for apps and also receive storage optimization notifications.
  • Apple News picks top stories; Today View displays best videos and stories selected by the editors in the new Spotlight tab.
  • Emergency SOS calls emergency services based on the person’s current location, automatically notifies the emergency contacts, shares your location, and displays a Medical ID.
  • Russian and English, Portuguese and English bilingual dictionary is supported with Arabic system font support.
  • iOS 11 is performance optimized for 64-bit applications. 32-bit applications will need to be updated to 64-bit by the application developer for it to work with this version of iOS.

Analysts agree that a mix of emulators/simulators and real devices are necessary to optimize your mobile app testing - learn more in this white paper, brought to you in partnership with Sauce Labs.
